Conservative radio host Michael Savage (real name: Michael Weiner), whose radio show The Savage Nation is the third-most listened-to radio talk show in the country, is currently offering Newt Gingrich $1 million to drop out of the race for the GOP nomination.

Dr. Weiner (whose doctorate is in — wait for it — "nutritional ethnomedicine"), claims that Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are the only two serious candidates left in the race, and that Romney alone has a good chance at beating Barack Obama next year.

"WHILE IT’S TRUE THAT ROMNEY IS NOT AS STRONG A CONSERVATIVE AS MANY WOULD LIKE HIM TO BE, THE MOST PRESSING ISSUE BEFORE AMERICA TODAY IS DEFEATING BARACK OBAMA."

Clearly, he's very passionate about this, even going so far as to write in all caps on the internet.

Anyway, Weiner's a bit of a dick: conservatives hate him for being a drooling maniac who reflects poorly on their party, and liberals hate him, for, well, a number of things, including his support for the English-only movement and many other generally hateful positions. (Among them that the increasing rate of autism diagnoses in the U.S. is a "racket" designed to get more disability payments for "poorer families who have found a new way to be parasites on the government.")

But hey, if he loses $1 million and gets Newt Gingrich out of the race, that's fantastic. Because there's no way Romney is actually that strong of a candidate. So, come on, Newt, take that money and walk away. Buy yourself something nice. You deserve it.

What's wrong

with English only? I've lived in foreign countries and conformed to their standards; not the other way around. I lived in Germany (not with the military) and studied German. You want to bring some of your culture and heritage with you to the US? Great, but learn English or stay home.

There's nothing wrong with encouraging immigrants to learn English. The problem is these "English-only" laws do precisely nothing to advance that goal. The real purpose of "English-only" legislation is the further the global perception that we're a bunch of ethno-centric xenophobes. For example a recent "English-only" bill in my state would have made it illegal for public employees use any language other than English to serve constituents. So what's wrong with that? First of all this legislation was targeting a "problem" that does not exist. No one in my state has ever had any problem getting the resources they need in English. Pressing one for English isn't that inconvenient. Second, laws like this have a variety of unintended consequences. For example, if law enforcement were to respond to a crime and the only witness spoke little or no English, under the proposed "English-only" law, they would be forbidden from gathering information in any other language.

The USA does not have an official language.

We should

have an official language here. I'm not suggesting that we go crazy like they are in Quebec with playground monitors ensuring that only French is spoken. I'm just suggesting that we shouldn't have to have everything in government offices printed in a million languages. If you're here, learn English or find someone that does to translate for you. Of course I'm not suggesting that police officers can't do their jobs, dumbass. If that were the case, don't you think anyone questioned or apprehended by the cops would suddenly speak gibberish?

I appreciate the "writer" of the above article removing the rather insulting comments regarding Romney's religion.

In addition, I fail to understand how the "writer" of this article considers being in favor of making English the official language of this country is "hateful". Not only would it serve a unifying force to the country, and a source of job creation, but it would also save quite a bit of taxpayer money on the government printing so much in so many languages. Forbidding other languages from being spoken, of course, is taking things a bit far, however, spending taxpayer money to do so in all instances is ridiculous.

That being said, I realize that those unable to read, write or speak English do have the benefit of not being able to read the aforementioned article! Which really is a win-win situation!

Why have you put writer in quotation marks? Do you not believe that this person wrote the article? Or are you quoting some one who said that this person was a writer? Maybe you're right, we should get an official language requirement, so you can be forced to learn how to use English properly.

As a self proclaimed Grammar Nazi, I would have expected you to know of the rather common usage of quotation marks to indicate irony or to sneer. I believe its also known as "scare quotes".
My guess is you already knew my intent, if not, I hope I helped you out.

At least the

English is the de facto language of technology, commerce, banking, aviation, and science all around the world. Declaring it the official language of the US will do exactly nothing to improve the lives of anyone. Pretty much every immigrant to the US knows that the absolute minimum requirement for success is mastery of the English language. Rather than making exclusionary laws, we should make it easier for them to learn it before or after they come here. Unless of course, the whole thing is a cheap xenophobic exercise in pandering to hateful and scared voters, in which case, never mind.

I'm sure I remember something in that constitution thingy about freedom of speech, but I just can't recall any place where it says "except in other languages".
The simple fact is that immigrants have ALWAYS gradually learned English, and their kids have learned it as well as you have. It takes time, whether you're Mexican, Chinese, Hmong, German, Polish, or - like many who helped fight the revolutionary war, French.
Go ahead, pass another "government intrusive " law, and then lecture me some more about government intrusion.

Fifty or more years ago you may have been correct. Unfortunately these days more and more immigrants to America are choosing not to learn the English language and are instead forcing schools and other government institutions to adapt to them, at great cost, both societal and monetary.
I would normally agree with you, and consider such a law to be intrusive by the government. The way things are going these days I believe the benefits far outweigh the possible intrusion. Making English the official language of this country would not make it illegal for private entities to use another language, however, tax dollars would no longer be spent on government entities being forced to provide everything in multiple languages. How is that a bad thing? If you want to immigrate to this country, you should be willing to work for it, not the other way around.
