GLAAD not big fans of Work It

Work It

Work It, ABC's new drag comedy, is not just offensive to intellect and general standards of comedy — it's also offensive to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The group has released a message denouncing the series for its handling of transgender issues.

While GLAAD has acknowledged that the show does not "explicitly address transgender people," it worries that "many home viewers unfamiliar with the realities of being transgender will still make the connection." Here's some more of the statement:

"'Work It' invites the audience to laugh at images of men trying to adopt a feminine appearance, thereby also making it easier to mock people whose gender identity and expression are different than the one they were assigned at birth...Not only does it inadvertently further notions that transgender identities are humorous or artificial, but imagery like this are one of the first things anti-LGBT activists resort to when trying to deny transgender people protections against discrimination."

The Human Rights Campaign is also pretty peeved, pushing a write-in campaign to ABC. HRC is further encouraging people to boycott the series, which premieres on January 3rd.

Work It may look disappointing (and potentially insensitive), but we can at least all take solace in this excellent alternative:

uh, oh.
good thing that GLAAD wasn't around when 'Bosom Buddies' aired. Otherwise, Tom Hanks' career might have never gotten off the ground.
take a chill pill, GLAAD! The show hasn't even aired yet!

TV critics have seen screeners. It doesn't look good.
