Oops: Gmail accidentally erased the inboxes of 150,000 users

Google has (finally?) proven that it is, in fact, fallible, and in terrifying fashion: a glitch wiped clean the inboxes, saved files, and chat histories of an estimated 150,000 users over the weekend, and most of the information has yet to be restored.

The company says the bug that caused users to first be denied access to accounts, then to lose years worth of information, affected only .08 percent of Gmail account holders, and issued the following unclear statement on the problem: "Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change."

So, does that mean everyone's getting all their email back and everything's fine, or should we start stocking up on canned food and preparing for the worst? Time will tell.
