The Rapture

Storm clouds loom over many of the images in this haunting series by Australian artist Bill Henson from his new book Mnemosyne. The houses, the bodies in the field, the man with the perfect cheekbones and the woman with the perfectly glossed-up breasts all seem strangely vulnerable under the pink and dark blue skies. The naked bodies walking through grass and darkness, the nude couples making out on top of wreckage, the road stretching out blurry in the distance, all of it calls to mind the endtimes. And yet, it also seems eerily, powerfully erotic; the apocalypse never looked so hot. — Ada Calhoun
