Wonder Boys
by Ryan Pfluger

Boys' rooms are never as intricate as girls'. Girls' rooms convey action, productivity and accumulation. They're like a Hooksexup center: the phone, the desk, the closet everything appears to be thoroughly purposeful and In Use. Magazine ads are tacked to the wall as if for inspiration; ticket stubs and photographs of people doing shots are wedged into the mirror frame, for memory's sake. There are plenty of atmospherics.

Boys aren't so good at rooms. Uncarpeted floors meet unadorned eggshell walls at austere, straight lines. There's a cat's scratching post on the floor, a boom box, a dehumidifier. Like the boy who lives there, it's a fairly naked, utilitarian thing that's experienced a minimum of tinkering. Everything's in plain sight, without a lot of extraneous embellishment or elaboration. And the thing is, it looks just fine that way. To start adding little details and flourishes would just deduct from its simplicity, which is kind of what you love about it in the first place. It's easy and honest, and you get the feeling you wouldn't mind hanging around in there all day. — Will Doig
