Oh snap! While many have grumbled about the tight restrictions on iPhone apps, it seems Steve Jobs has no intention of backing down.
Spurred on by the recent, well publicized purge of apps that were considered too racy to exist, Apple customer Matthew Browing emailed Jobs to express his concern about Apple's new role as morality police (he suggested the comparably saner idea of parental controls). Here's what Jobs had to say:
You know, there’s a porn store for Android. You can download nothing but porn. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That’s a place we don’t want to go – so we’re not going to go there.
Ya burnt, Android! Sex perverts, you know where to go, and it's not the Apple store. And while it is certainly Jobs' call on what applications he wants to allow on his company's product, the effects of this attitude can be pretty severe. Check out, for instance, the new terms of service for the Grindr app, which is kind of like Manhunt but with a GPS system:
Never let it be said that Apple didn't do everything in their power to protect all those minors using casual hook-up applications restricted to users eighteen and older from the following:
- "Suggestive" photos
- The use of vegetables (I guess in a light salad?)
- Photos of genitals and photos of genitals covered by "any other means" (a set of instructions right out of The Trial)
