    Leonardo DiCaprio without a shirt

Is Leonardo DiCaprio the biggest movie star in the world? He starred in the former biggest movie of all-time, a recent surprise Best Picture winner (the epic, violent The Departed), and two hugely successful movies in a row in Shutter Island and Inception.

So, why does this Rolling Stone interview make him sound more despondent and messed up than ever? Maybe he's just now getting past whatever was holding him back before...

"I was essentially a dwarf with the biggest mouth in the world. I would talk back to anyone and be up for any fight, and when you tell a kid that's three years older than you to shove it, you're going to get your ass beat… I was a real punk, there's no question about it."

"I got to be wild and nuts... I didn't care what anyone thought.... It was also about avoiding the tornado of chaos, of potential downfall. My two main competitors in the beginning, the blond-haired kids I went to audition with, one hung himself and the other died of a heroin overdose... I was never into drugs at all. There aren’t stories of me in a pool of my own vomit in a hotel room on the Hollywood Strip."

"I had better success meeting girls before Titanic. My interactions with them didn't have all the stigma behind it, not to mention there wasn’t a perception of her talking to me for only one reason."

"It was like there was a separate entity out there," he says. "Not to use a James Cameron reference, but it was like being in a little bit of an avatar." He cringes. "That's going to sound extremely self- indulgent. It's going to sound like, 'Oh, I was a frickin' avatar,' give me a break, I'm already vomiting." [Rolling Stone]

He is the biggest yes. Men and women like him and he chooses great roles. I'm a little worried about how he is aging though

He's hardly recognizable as that skinny kid in Romeo and Juliette and Titanic. Sounds like he got what he wanted.

I think he sounds incredibly honest. A price does come with fame. And even though there are a lot of pluses to being a successful actor, I can only imagine the amount of drawbacks. I feel like many famous people grow increasingly despondent the more fame they acquire.

Psychologists talk about how fame and beauty aren't that great all the time. I'm sure it's even harder to be hideous and poor, but the folks in the middle class have it way better than the movie stars.

I thought that was Gone With the Wind when inflated for adjustment. That might just be domestically, though.

Wait, the person whose comment I was responding to disappeared. Now I look like I'm correcting the article and I'm an idiot for mixing up the words. This is not good.

@Me - Fairbanks deleted my comment (increasingly common) and corrected the article without noting the original mistake. As for Gone with the Wind, adjusted for inflation its around $1.6 billion, sadly beaten both by Titanic and Avatar even unadjusted. I'd be interested to see a comparison of number of tickets sold, but that data doesn't seem to be available.

<3 Leo. I even went to see Titanic because of him.

    Lower middle class

Me, I agree with you. People who are poor struggle with everything. People who are super-rich struggle with overexposure and too much paperwork (likely ennui as well) and us in the lower-middle class live in eternal fear of our "just enough" turning into nothing. I'd love to be middle-middle class.

Kudos to mr. DiCaprio for being sincere.
