God bless Mark Foley. After five years of mindless death and destruction in Iraq, a great city drowned, a nuclear Korea and an ever-warmer planet, politics was looking grim. The Foley scandal, if not exactly brightening our view of humanity, at least added some much-needed gallows humor: a middle-aged Congressman in his office on the Hill between sessions, his grey suit pants unzipped, typing "Whatcha wearin?" with one hand. You know things have gotten bad when a scene from a David Mamet play is the comic relief.
We make no claims to be able to help you untangle this psychic mess, but this year's Politics Issue does unearth the dark humor, the dark horses and compelling personalities accompanying this election year. So say what you will about our corrupt, gerrymandered, cash-controlled political system with the absurd Electoral College if it produces farcical conversation pieces like Foley, it can't be all bad. We'll happily head to the polls on November 7 to pull the lever or more likely, to push the touch-screen button on the fraud-susceptible computer that produces no paper record whatsoever — for our favorite candidates. See you there. Will Doig
