Russian punk band imprisoned over Putin protest in church

With all the posturing and fashion statements that inform U.S. punk rock, it's hard to remember that being a punk in other countries is often a genuine act of rebellion that can and will get your shit rocked. Proof positive is that two members of the feminist Russian punk band, Pussy Riot, are now stuck in a Moscow prison over an anti-Putin protest they staged in a church.

Nadezhda Toloknnikova and Mariya Alekhina were arrested on charges of "hooliganism" last month after they stormed a Moscow church, spouting anti-Putin slogans and causing general disarray. Pussy Riot, in case you were wondering, is comprised of seven women who always play onstage in skimpy dresses, tights, and brightly colored balaclavas. 

The particularly hooliganistic part of the act happened when the band appealed to the Virgin Mary to push Putin out of office and end his term once and for all. Why exactly the band is vehemently anti-Putin has not been discussed; perhaps its the rumors that he rigged last year's election, or maybe it's the creepy video targeted at first-time voters? The two women, both mothers of young children, could face a ridiculous seven years in jail if convicted.

Punk's not dead, ladies and gentleman. It just went where it's needed.
