MTV Sets Release Date for Daria DVDs, Drops "Music Televsion" From Its Logo

daria_comingsoon

MTV giveth, and MTV taketh away. How about the good news first? The complete DVD set of MTV's (amazing) cartoon series Daria - long held up because they used "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" and "Lookin' Down the Barrel of a Gun" and every other song released in the 90s to score their interstitials - finally has a release date, May 11, 2010. No idea what the price will be, but I will sell my body to make the cash if need be. Man, isn't it great when you're reminded about the greatness that MTV is sometimes capable of? It's as if nothing could dash these happy...oh:

Is it a surprise to anyone actually watching MTV that the network on Monday quietly dropped "Music Television" from its logo? Probably not. It's a wonder that anyone even noticed the difference.

But a difference there is. For the first time in the network's 29-year history, MTV has decided to give the channel's iconic logo a face-lift.

I mean...at least they're being honest? You can't fault anyone for honesty. But let's face it - this is still sad:

Resigned sighs all around.

I actually like it when it was music television. I remember waking up at 5 am as a 6th grader to watch the risque music videos that my parents didn't approve of (this mainly consisted of Right Said Fred, but hey 6th grade).

I suppose they became an entertainment brand and others, like fuse, filled the niche of music videos. Aren't we just waxing nostalgic? I feel like viral media has killed the place of music videos to a certain extent.

Don't care about the lack of "Music Television"; all I want is: Trent: Well, I have to go. Mystic Spiral has a practice at seven. Jane: It's nine. Trent: Oh...I'd better get going then.

JK, I'm with you. It might be sad, but I'm willing to give up on "Music Television" if I can have this: Daria: Welcome to It's A Nutty Nutty Nutty World. We're just nuts...about humiliation. ...available to me at all times.

True story: my earliest memory is crying in the middle of the night and my parents rocking me to sleep while dancing to the video for Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing". Now I don't think I can name a single music video I've seen in the past five years outside of blogs. Also, Daria's copious usage of the songs of Cake was a huge factor in my swearing lifelong allegiance to that band.

@Sanskrit: Thanks for making me feel like Methuselah. "Money for Nothing" was the most amazing video -- the year I graduated from college. I remember when MTV came on in August 1981, weeks before I left for college. It was simply amazing -- music videos any time I wanted them, not just at 1 a.m. on Sunday mornings courtesy of Don Kirshner. Those early videos had some sketchy production values (oversaturated whites, anyone?), but they had an energy and a grip on teen consciousness. Not that I'd ever want to go back to that time in my life, but there was something special about being wasted on New Year's Eve and singing along at top volume to Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran" video with my best friend.

It's kind of sad that the new generation will not be able to enjoy MTV or here in Canada,Muchmusic for actual music and not reality tv shows. I remember coming home and watching music for 4 hours straight and being introduced to awesome bands that i still love as today. Oh well!As someone mentioned earlier-at least they are giving us Daria!

I watch these videos from Siddha Yoga Dham. They are actually music videos, long ecstatic chants. Never thought of them as music videos, though. Really thought of them as diksha, or initiation into the Siddhas grace, but I remember that joy of seeing the Beatles, even Elvis sing the latest popular release. What a magical artistic expression those videos were, like the Beatles Penny Lane. Now the videos are like everywhere and I have no sense of seeing my favorite performer, probably because my favorite performers have become the likes of Gurumayi, Deva Premal and Krishna Das. Can't find them on my satellite dish though. I guess that's just the Way of the World.
