Morning Deal Report: Sam Mendes Meets the Preacher

Posted by Scott Von Doviak

The 75-issue Preacher comic book by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon seemed like an ideal fit for HBO, which has struggled to launch a new buzz series since stalwarts like The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Deadwood went dark. The projected series fell through earlier this year, however, and it didn’t take long for Columbia Pictures to secure the rights for a feature film version. Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road) will direct the supernatural tale, his second graphic novel adaptation following Road to Perdition, which…kind of sucked.

Samuel L. Jackson will play Sho'nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, in a remake of 1985’s The Last Dragon. “The updated plot will be along the same lines of the original, centering on young martial arts student Leroy Green in his quest through the streets of New York to achieve the highest level of martial arts accomplishment, known as the Last Dragon,” says The Hollywood Reporter, which several times refers to the original as a “cult classic.” Can’t say I ever joined that particular cult.

Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington will star in Book of Eli, a post-apocalyptic action movie from the Hughes Brothers. “revolves around a lone warrior (Washington) who must fight to bring society the knowledge that could be the key to its redemption. Oldman has been set to portray the despot of a small makeshift town who's determined to take possession of the book Eli's guarding,” Variety reports.
