Today In Mulligans: Trouble In The "Dollhouse" As Joss Whedon Refilms His Newest Pilot

Posted by Bryan Christian

Bad week for Joss Whedon. First his Dr. Horrible climax leaves more than a few fans upset, and now he's back to the drawing board with the pilot for Dollhouse, his highly anticipated, Eliza Dushku-starring, hitgirl-in-a-box sci-fi series for Fox.

"I think I can hit this nail on the head a little more solidly," he told TV Barn, to invite viewers into what he told Matt Mitovich is a "complicated" show. He explained on Whedonesque.com, "There were a few clarity issues for some viewers. There were also some slight issues with tone — I was in a dark, noir kind of place...and didn't bring the visceral pop the network had expected from the script."

Some Whedon fans will hear this and undoubtedly get nervous, recalling (as io9 does) that something similar happened to Whedon's ill-fated but much beloved previous outing for Fox, Firefly. We, on the other hand, are heartened by the news, recalling (as astute readers might) that we thought the previews of the pilot episode made it seem a little flimsy and undercooked in the first place. So, we're remaining optimistic about the whole affair. (Heck, the show's still packed with hotties like Dushku and Battlestar Galactica's Tahmoh Penikett -- it's gonna have to really suck for us to not give it a chance!)

currently, my new standard for oddly pleasant science fiction shows is actually terminator, and not a joss whedon production.  i hope, new pilot or not, this can remedy that.

also, i hope to god when it comes out on dvd he includes the original pilot.  but maybe that's just me.

@eurrapanzy: i hope so too, and i bet it will. the firefly dvd tried to undo some of the damage done to the series by fox. you know, things like, oh, including them all and putting them in order. lol. so i think we'll see it at some point, somewhere.

i've been looking forward to this show for a long time, and i really hope that both joss and fox learned from their previous  experiences together.

Lindy Parker has worked as a ghostwriter, editor, dance instructor and a purveyor of dreams, one beer at a time. She loves Charles Dickens and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and also, straight-to-video releases with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's possible she reads more teen fiction than she should. She hails from Los Angeles, her hometown and soul mate, but she lives in Brooklyn, the fling she'll never forget.

She loves one-liners with sting and hates the stench of the subway in the summer. That said, she can’t get enough of either.
