"American Idol" Has Got Porno Problems [UPDATED]

Posted by Jake Kalish

There's a very funny little telephone complication caused by Idol taking Anoop Desai as its 13th finalist...

You see, when American Idol asks viewers to vote for finalists, they generally have them call one of twelve numbers, which range from 1-866-436-5701 to 1-866-436-5712. Pretty straightforward stuff. Except now the show's got 13 finalists. And it doesn't own the number 1-866-436-5713.

Because that number is a phone sex line. Yessssss! This was all discovered when a curious Idol fan dialed the number, was asked if he liked "hot horny girls", and then mentioned his discovery on the fansite Dial Idol.com.

Love this story. We have no doubt Idol will figure its way around this by choosing a different number, or a whole new set of numbers, lest they traumatize America's preadolescents. But we wish they wouldn't. After all, if "hot horny girls" were the thirteenth contestant, they would totally win. They always do.

UPDATE: Ryan Seacrest says (via Twitter) that the producers are on it -- but won't say how -- which we presume means it would take more than 140 characters to describe.

Lindy Parker has worked as a ghostwriter, editor, dance instructor and a purveyor of dreams, one beer at a time. She loves Charles Dickens and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and also, straight-to-video releases with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's possible she reads more teen fiction than she should. She hails from Los Angeles, her hometown and soul mate, but she lives in Brooklyn, the fling she'll never forget.

Olivia Purnell left Ohio for sunny Los Angeles; then found that she couldn’t ignore New York City’s call, and brought herself to Brooklyn where she has worked with GenArt, BlackBook, the School of American Ballet, and finished an M.A. in Creative Writing from N.Y.U. She loves one-liners with sting and hates the stench of the subway in the summer. That said, she can’t get enough of either.
