"Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" Is Way Weirder Than You Remember (VIDEO)

We've been having something of a Peanuts renaissance these days. You may remember our enthusiasm for A Charlie Brown Christmas back in December; what we didn't mention was that we also DVR'd and multiply watched its more recently produced companion pieces, Charlie Brown's Christmas Tales and I Want A Dog For Christmas, Charlie Brown, and while they're not masterpieces, they're still damned charming and damned strange. What's not to love about Sally dreaming about sugar plums, not knowing what they are, and wondering aloud if she's "freaking out."

But we'd forgotten how genuinely odd the mid-70's Charlie Brown cartoons could be until we watched last night's Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown. First produced in 1975, Be My Valentine featured bluesy guitar worthy of any 1982 white people thriller and some seriously stark, terrifying observations on young love. Like, as in, our wife cried. (OK, she's pregnant and swimming in hormones, but still -- we were uncomfortable too.)

Don't believe us? 'Cause the clip up there is only part of the, erm, fun. Click through for the entire half-hour parade of cruelty and despair.
