I liked this essay, but found little of it uplifting, funny, or anything positive. The vibe was tense; nothing really positive was said about the guy. I was totally thrown off by the ending, too--you married the guy? It just came out of nowhere. I, too, hope the sex got way, way better.

I'm only curious about the other feedback. I found this story to be very dark, not uplifting. The end is rushed, with little emotion, almost like quick bullet points about what irrefutably happened thereafter, not how it felt. The speaker feels immature, yes, but in such a way that it feels as though that voice is intentional. It doesn't necessarily read as a real experience, but rather as the memory of an experience, which naturally is a little more fanciful/extreme than the actual thing. Usually I wouldn't like something like this, but I think this one worked.

Apparently women aren't allowed to be reckless, but men are? Yes, it was an irresponsible moment -- something the author addresses at length in the essay. Judging from her bio and photo, she's grown-up, she has a kid, and she seems to have come out okay despite a bout of "being an 18-year-old girl." Let's not be quite so quick to patronize, perhaps?

To the author: Slow down, doll. This nightmare "worked out," but I'm worried for you. You could have gotten an STD (been checked?) or gotten pregs (pulling out is only a plan to fail). Dude could have been a serial murderer (or had some other frat pals who wanted in on the action after he drugged you). Please don't think that, because you've escaped this time, everything's ok. At your age, there are likely to be more guys, so play it SAFE next time.

Does every last piece of writing about a sexual encounter have to endorse safe sex practices? If so we are going to have send a memo to all the pulitzer prize winning novelists out there and tell them to rip up there writing and start over. Seriously people, this is one woman's experience of virginity loss, imperfect and real. It's neither a picture perfect disney story, as some are claiming, or a reckless endorsement of unsafe sex.

I agree with LP. Would she still feel so good about the experience if she were knocked up or gifted with an STD from this guy? I doubt it. It's too bad most women today don't understand or care about how such irresponsible actions can negatively affect the rest of their lives. So many women eliminate themselves from the deep end of the dating pool with just this kind of nonsense, spring break or otherwise. I hope it's worth it to them.

I am sorry I agree with the previous comment it sounds like some romance novel that gloss over the cliche of losing her virginity during spring break. Sounds like she is justifying her actions in a cloud of.. but I fell in love with him ...eventually. She had sex unprotected sex with a stranger without any thought to her personal safety or mental well being. I like fairy tales to.. and I will put this one in the Disney file. Utter crap.

Well written but how you ended up with Steve would be more interesting. Unsatisfactory, vaguely embarrassing virginity loss is usual. Falling in love with the guy afterwards is different. I felt the most interesting part of the story was glossed over in less than a paragraph.

I thought that was touching and well done -- it's interesting to hear what virginity loss is like for a teenaged girl. The previous commenter sounds like a vanilla colored ape, as the author's brother is described.
