Reader Feedback on "Superbad for Her"
"There have already been hints at a happy ending for Nicole. One of the geeks has a crush on her." That would be a happy ending? Are we assuming that she defines her own worth by how desirable she is to men? That she would be delighted to attract the attention of just anybody, that she will like anybody who likes her?

You know, when they were having the last call for applicants, I said, "I want to apply for that show and show everybody the other side of geeks, the ones that don't end up with trophy wives." And my friends told me that that wouldn't work because the way the show is set up doesn't work with female geeks. And it sounds absolutely awful. But maybe it will open people's eyes that there's more social stigma, and worse, going on.

"Date Patrol", a makeover show which ran on TLC a few years ago, walked that fine line between conformity and self-improvement you talk about here. They usually did a good job of compromising, and their male and female subjects ended up looking like themselves, only better. Makeovers need not be an act of sublimated violence.

Watch "What Not to Wear" on TLC sometime, which is all about building confidence by teaching women how to be a more attractive, well-dressed version of THEMSELVES. Often the exterior make-over on the show really digs to the deep-rooted insecurities that account for shabby, clueless dressing, and the woman is happy and looks great by the end - without having lost any of her originality or identity. They get teased, but it's all in the spirit of tough love rather than ridicule or cruelty. No one tries to make a Bunny out of a nerd, or a glamorous sophisticate out of a down-to-earth hippie.

Jeez - ur totally right. The girl nerd really doesn't work for the same sort of entertainment unless there's a deus ex machina makeover in the end, and then it probably compromises a certain amount of the girl's identity. I think jest w/ the male nerds is ok b/c their "intelligence" makes them whole people (a sum to zero scenario), but for a girl nerd, intelligence just doesn't seem like it would bail her out of in looks dept., u know, since a woman's intelligence is stereotypically secondary to her looks. I hope they don't ruin this poor chick's life, especially if she had the guts to subject herself to what could be a challenging situation for someone who might not be completely confident.
