The calendar is full made-up-sounding holidays for good causes. And there’s nothing wrong with that — even if it’s unclear what the Black History Months of the world actually do for betterment of society other than creating an excuse for elementary school assignments and a vague sense of goodwill.
Equal Pay Day, which was last Tuesday, might be one such holiday — but it’s a very interesting one. In the United States today, women make about seventy-seven percent of what men make for doing the same job. That means that a woman would need to work all of 2010 and then an extra fifteen weeks into 2011, or from New Year's Day to last Tuesday, to earn what a man would earn in a year doing the same job.
Which is crazy, since we can all agree that 2010 feels like a very long-time ago. And that makes gender-based pay discrimination feel like a much bigger deal than a percentage. Feminist groups have been working to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act for over a decade, with no luck — not surprisingly, since no one seems to have ever heard of it.
Anyway, if you didn’t on Tuesday, gentlemen of the world, you should buy a really awesome sandwich for a female colleague. It’s the least you can do.
