"Blast the Nazis" video game set in Auschwitz stirs up controversy
By Jeff MillsDecember 17th, 2010, 3:13 pmComments (7)Jewish groups, including the Anti-Defamation League and members of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, are up in arms about a new video game, Sonderkommando Revolt, which is set during a violent uprising at the Auschwitz death camp.
The game, which happens to have been developed by an Israeli, is slated to be released on January 1, 2011, and seems an extension of the revisionist revenge fantasy of Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. In the game, the Jewish characters procure guns and slaughter their S.S. captors. The Simon Wiesenthal Center's Rabbi Abraham Cooper cautioned,
"What happens if this is the only thing a young person gets to know about the Holocaust or a concentration camp? When you speak to survivors of the Holocaust, you quickly learn they have difficulty transmitting the horrors that they went through. This is not an issue that should be reduced to a game."
The ADL seconded that emotion, calling it "horrific and inappropriate." Whether or not you think this game should even be sold, I think we're all in agreement that Sonderkommando Revolt doesn't have many Best Graphics awards in its future.
