Tim Burton may be about to have a major creative reinvention, comparable to U2 recording Achtung Baby after The Joshua Tree: his next Hot Topic-dark adaptation of a widely recognized story will not star Johnny Depp. Instead, according to the AV Club (via The Hollywood Reporter), Burton will adapt Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (or more likely Lon Chaney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame) as a starring vehicle for notorious deformed ugly-man Josh Brolin. It's probably too much to expect Burton to break from his "dark = eyeshadow + perfect cheekbones" formula, and maybe he's just sticking with what works, although arguably, his shtick hasn't really worked very well in a decade or so. While you contemplate the perils of creative stagnation, check out these other potential Burton projects.
