Lady Gaga has offended another ageing diva. After seeing photos of Lady Gaga's recent on-stage foray as her alter-ego Yuyi, the glamorous, handicapped mermaid, Midler confronted the young artist via twitter, accusing Gaga of stealing her own wheel-chair bound persona, Delores Delago.

The idea that Gaga's Yuyi was an homage to the veteran singer's Delago never seemed to cross her mind, as Midler had some choice words for the singer. Posted on Gaga's twitter account, she said:

"Dear @ladygaga Ive been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980 -- You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker tits -- mermaid's mine."

Because 1980 is six years before the Little Gaga came into this world, and nearly twenty years before the singer incorporated Yuyi alongside her wardrobe of beef ensembles and firecracker tits, Midler would certainly seem to have mermaid-dibs. But it also seems like Midler may have realized she'd overreacted (or she's been subject to a barrage of hate-mail from Gaga's Little Monsters posse), since Midler tweeted a follow-up:

"@ladygaga, let's drink this over at the Emmys in September. Fabulous mermaids can coexist!"

And so, it seems, they've amicably settled their differences. And here I was hoping for a wheelchair race.

Right, because it's such an extraordinarily original idea, two people couldn't have come up with it independently.

I kind of hope that wasn't the case, because if we live in a world where "wheelchair mermaid" comes up in multiple performance strategies, I'll probably have to kill myself.

Sorry Dumplings, but Gaga is not all that original and you can watch any one of her live shows and see a lot of other artist's influence, so I'm totally convinced she stole this one.

Artists are completely and totally influenced by other artists and their surroundings (I know, how shocking.) But Dumplings has a point. You have the great idea you want to be a mermaid for a performance, and then realize your mobility suffers because of it. How does one fix that? Well a wheelchair is certainly one of those ways. It's really not all that crazy. There have been several inventions where they were simultaneously created by two different people on opposite sides of the world with no knowledge of the other existing, a mermaid in a wheelchair is a slightly less complex idea than inventions that revolutionized our world as it is today.
