Children's book by The Decemberists frontman teaches kids about vegetarianism, murder
By Kelly BourdetOctober 13th, 2011, 3:31 pmComments (8)Colin Meloy, that guy with the annoying voice who is also the frontman of The Decemberists, has teamed up with his illustrator wife to create a trilogy of illustrated children's books, The Wildwood Chronicles. The books, clearly destined to be classics, center around the adventures of Prue McKeel, a twelve-year-old vegetarian from Portland. Not only does he have the misfortune of being a vegetarian, but his baby brother is then kidnapped by a murder of crows and he must travel through an enchanted forest to return him.
Stephen Heyman, of the New York Times, writes:
The book, intended for ages 9 to 12, brims with grimly comic violence. Coyotes dressed in Napoleonic uniforms train musket, cannon and bayonet on woodland bandits, talking birds and an industrious rat named Septimus. Many perish in the fight, although not nearly as many as Decemberists fans might be accustomed to.
So, hipster parents, here's a great gift idea for your vegetarian child this winter holiday gift-giving season.

I hope the book actually uses the phrase "murder of crows." We've gotta get that one into the children's vocabulary early.
I accidentally read that as "murder of cows", probably because I had vegetarianism on my mind.
Haha, more hilarious mocking of vegetarians. Always a great approach when you've lost the philosophical argument but couldn't be bothered to change your behaviour.
Yeah, I don't understand the bashing of both vegetarians and the Decemberists, two things I generally consider pretty good. Meloy actually seems like he would have a great mind for children's books.
Why does everybody hate the Decemberists? I can't figure it out. I'm not saying they're the second coming, but geez, why the hate on? Every time Oceanside comes on my iPod, I smile and dance. Anyone care to explain this? I'm stymied.
bashing...? methinks y'all are a wee bit sensitive.
sarcasm, sure. snarkiness, alright , but bashing? please.
I'll read my kids his book when he lets my kids open his next concert.
Prue , the character in the book, is a GIRL!
Maybe you should read the book before writing it up!! : (W
BTW : It' a a GREAT read!
