Representative David Wu, a seven-term Democratic congressman from Oregon, admitted in a written response to The Oregonian that he accepted two oxycodone tablets from a donor after leaving his own doctor-prescribed painkillers for his neck back in Washington. Wu wrote, "This was the only time that this has ever happened. I recognize that my action showed poor judgment at the time, and I sincerely regret having put my staff in a difficult position."

Wu had previously freaked out campaign staffers with his unpredictable behavior, including sending them odd emails from his federally-issued Blackberry, among them one showing him dressed in a tiger costume. He claims that he was stressed out from raising his two children as a single father, as well as caring for his elderly mother. But a tiger costume? Is he next going to be a spokesman for Frosted Flakes?

Wu admitted yesterday that sending photos of himself in a Halloween costume was "unprofessional" and "inappropriate," and he has sought mental-health treatment, including counseling and medication. Wu also had to apologize before the 2004 election for a former girlfriend's accusation of sexual assault, and in 2007 he stated on the House floor that "there are Klingons in the White House." I recommend that Representative Wu not be served any rum cake at the next congressional wingding.

Tough Decision

As one of his constituents I'm on the fence. He's been completely ineffective as a congressman. Which is not a bad thing. He hasn't brought us anything but he hasn't caused us much pain either. Then there's the fact that he hasn't voted his conscience on anything, simply voting the straight Dem ticket. Even the hardcore Dems here in Or don't agree with every bill .
