In The Daily Show's first new episode since this weekend's shootings in Arizona, Jon Stewart addressed the tragedy with one of his signature earnest-but-still-sort-of-funny speeches, this one clocking in at over six minutes long. Start in around the 2:25 mark for the full speech, in which Stewart says of the shootings, "I wouldn't blame our political rhetoric any more than I would blame heavy-metal music for Columbine." The stance is actually a bit of a departure from other reactions  to the story from the left-leaning world, so do you think Stewart has a good point here? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Well said JS. The only person to blame here is the shooter. Period.

Whatever has happened to all of those gunslingers in Arizona who pack heat, yet can't be found anywhere the lead has been flying? I thought it was every American's dream to draw his weapon, point, and let fly at some miscreant's misdirected lead.

@twolane: Considering the fact that not even the police officers had time or sufficient clearance to return fire, the clumsy intervention by a group of armed amateur gunslingers would have only increased the casualty toll. Fortunately, every American's "B" dream of going unarmed against an armed bad guy and tackling him to the ground came true for a couple of brave folks in the crowd. Much better dream; much better outcome.

Ditto what "meh said. Check out slate.com. The guy holding down the shooter's legs was packing and ready to fire. And almost shot one of the civilians who had taken the shooter's weapon away from him.

This is the right way to follow up a story like this. The current precedent in America is to uncover the one pure evil that single-handedly caused the whole mess, ban it, and assume bad stuff will never happen again. Go read the David Frum story.

What I don't understand is this. Why, is this tragedy any worse than any of the other multiple murders that have happened. Last month, some guy abducted three or four family members, Strangled all but one. Cut the dead up and stuffed them in a tree. Yet somehow, this shooting is worse that the death of those people? Where are the heart felt political speeches then? Trying to understand "why this happened?" Examining if perhaps knives should be regulated?

This is all B.S. I love Jon, but I am sad to see him dip into this well. The suspect in custody allegedly has a severe mental condition. But now suddenly it isn't enough that this poor man (yes the suspect who obviously is suffering.) His friends and family, the victims of his act are all suffering. No, that isn't enough, somehow there has to be something more here. Some lesson we can learn that will justify one political agenda or the other. Or make us feel sorry for just how "vulnerable" the average politician is when they are out there campaigning..

Whoa is the life of the elite....

Come on people... snap out of it..

This is no worse than any other tragedy happening in America..

Doctor Jones is Righ

Fully agree Doctor Jones. Everyday Americans carry out atrocities far worse than this, but because an "elected official" was hit it's somehow worse. I feel for the victims, but no more than I normally do. I guess the only good thing that comes of it is...wait...spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to get the President & entourage to Tuscon to do a 15 minute speech about a "relatively light" tragedy, as tragedies go, is not a good thing.

odd this.
Nobody has contributed to the "toxicity" of the political enviroment more than Joh Stewart..
The psyco fck that did this is smack dab in the middle of Stewarts demographic.
Seeing as more teen to 30 somethings, get their news from the Daily Show and take John's BS as fact,, perhaps that little speech( as John mentions..) WAS only to make JS and TDS fell better about their involvement in this hoorrible event...

@billy...
several things.
one, when trying to make a point such as yours, you aren't doing yourself any favors by failing to use proper grammar and spelling.
two, the psycho who did this doesn't fall into Jon Stewart's demographic half as well as you fall into the stereotypical uneducated, ignorant conservative who makes judgement on topics of which he knows nothing.
three, if you had any sense at all you'd be able to draw the conclusion that the man shot a democrat, so he probably doesn't watch Jon Stewart. Jon Stewart is very liberal as is his demographic. Liberals tend not to shoot other liberals. In fact, liberals tend not to shoot anything and try to get everyone around them to do the same.
four, for the love of god, please educate yourself. i know deep down somewhere inside you there is a person capable of coherent communication. get your news from multiple sources, don't accept anything anyone says at face value... think about it first. figure out how it fits in with your current knowledge and with the world around you. this goes for what i'm saying to you as well. and think with a little common sense before you speak. spell check isn't a bad idea, either.
