There's a major sex scandal afoot in India right now involving a dude named Nithyananda Swami. Swami is a Hindu holy man currently under arrest after a sex tape featuring his very hot threesome leaked to the heavily-censored Indian internet, although Swami denies it.
The interesting thing here isn't that there is a big sex scandal involving a celebrated religious figure, it's how the culture handled the uproar:
Nithyananda Swami was detained in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh where police said he had been hiding.
The guru stepped down last month as head of a religious organisation based in the southern city of Bangalore.
His announcement came after a video apparently showing him engaging in sexual acts with two women. He says he is innocent and the video is a fake. [BBC]
His posters and other images featuring his likeness were burned after the rumors began to hit the media there. Between that and the other elements in bold above, you have the makings of utter hysteria, and is a remarkably different vibe from the Catholic Church or any other religious sex scandal in America.
I hate to say it... but wouldn't it be better if we had a bit more of the lynch mob mentality here? Instead, these sex scandals surprise and repel no one, and the religious elements that control much of the country end up carrying on with their work, practically uninterrupted.
