Drew Barrymore and Justin Long making out

In the September issue of Marie Claire, Drew Barrymore talks romance, indie rockers, phone sex, social networking and more. She also explains why she thinks text messaging is terrible for your love life:

On the state of her love life: "I'm happy to say that, at 35 years old, I feel I know less than ever. But in a liberating way. I'm trying to figure out how to make relationships work. The only thing I know is that there aren't any rules. There should be no infrastructure on how a couple is supposed to work. Life isn't like that."

On phone sex: "It can work. I think it's fucking weird... I totally tried it, though, with a little success... but it was just a thing you try, like wearing orange for a while."

On friends with benefits: "Notice how much fucking easier friendships are - because expectations are the mother of deformity. And, also, the minute you have sex, it changes everything."

On social networking and texts: "The fact that I'm begging for a phone call is pathetic in this age of technology. Plans are made by text - I can't stand it. My ex, Fabrizio [Moretti of The Strokes], and I used to always make each other things for Valentine's Day... I encourage people to make things for each other - it's so beautiful."

On her love of typewriters and the printed word: "I just don't like this compulsive, instantaneous, over- information, lack-of-privacy, weirdo aspect of the world. If you meet someone, they already know everything [about you]. What about showing up on the date and saying, 'What do you do for a living? Who are your friends?' Yes, you can avoid maybe a serial killer, but who fucking knows? I am a romantic and it scares me…."

On what's most important for her in a relationship: "Definitely laughter. lt smells good - like somebody's skin. It's amazing to me that, when you fall in love with someone, you just start to love the way they smell. If I have to go away from someone, I say, 'Wear this T-shirt for five days in a row, then I'm going to take it with me.'"

Lots of her sentences start off sort of intelligently and her sentiments are...nice, but something is very off there.

I like her. She seems down to earth and unpretentious and pretty funny.

She didn't really say why texting is bad for your relationship just that she can't stand it. Bad Hooksexup! Bad!

actually it's Hooksexup's fault she comes off sounding weird. they cut her responses up. even a few things she said in the original article came out totally different here. she didn't say LAUGHTER smells good, she said love does, and she never says anything about friends with benefits! she says friendships are easier than relationships! BAD Hooksexup! obviously you need to hire me so you'll have a decent editor on staff.
