Back in the late '90s, within months of Apple releasing the first iMac, you couldn't throw a stone without hitting a wannabe, semi-translucent iToaster, iToothbrush, or iStapler. It now seems inevitable that some filmmaker would be joking around with a couple of friends, one of them would recount how her new boyfriend stumbled across her vibrator and she diffused the potentially awkward situation by saying, "Don't worry sweetie they come in all kinds of colors" and, thus, the iBrator was born.

The instant internet classic iBrator "Colors" parody turns six years old this summer, but its creator, Keith Larsen, still receives giddy emails from people seeing it for the first time. I asked Keith about the buzz the iBrator caused in its day. — Jason Wishnow

Where can we see more of the iBrator?
All of the iBrator spoofs plus the original Apple ads are on our site, https://sleeplessknights.com/ibrator/ibratormedia.html

After coming up with the idea, how did you actually make it? Did you perform any research, any sex shop reconnaissance?
Nah. I looked at the iMac itself and realized that if you just pulled the screen side out and made it a tubular design, you have [an iBrator]. It's not just a colored tube, or colored vibrator, it needed the Apple look and design sense. It needed the venting holes, the stripes, the batteries showing through.

How long did it take to make the iBrator spoofs?
"Colors" took about three weeks once we nailed the design.

How did you make "Colors"?

We built it in Adobe After Effects. We layered the Mac ads underneath and lowered the opacity of the top layer so that we could see the Apple ad through ours. This allowed us to mimic, to the frame, the shots for each one. We switched to Lightwave for any moves that had to be done in 3D space. The buzzing is an altered Norelco razor.

Where did you first screen "Colors"?
At MacWorld New York in June 1999, we attended Brian Maffitt's After Effects User Group and got a standing ovation. Within a week, Geocities wrote us that we were exceeding bandwidth limits and we moved the site to a paid server.

How did people respond?

Well, at the time, Apple's legal department was shutting down all iMac spoofs, so I was waiting for that shoe to drop. Once Time magazine mentioned us and Steve Jobs "acknowledging" that he "liked it," I knew I was safe.

Did anyone try to buy an iBrator off the site?

They still do.

What are you up to now?
Matt Bradbury and I run a production facility called Sleepless Knights Media (https://www.sleeplessknights.com). I have also founded the Connecticut Final Cut Pro User Group (https://www.ctfcpug.org) and have been named the Apple Pro-Apps Leader for Connecticut by Apple.
