My first real exposure to documentary filmmaking came as a toddler watching Sesame Street. I still have vivid recollections of vintage instructional films tenuously segueing the animated bits and the skits with puppets. Back then, I could tell they were up to something, but my feeble Montessori mind couldn't quite decipher any punchline to the producers' cruel educational joke, sandwiching explanatory exposes on yeast factories between the number twelve and Super Grover. What were they thinking?

Todd Lincoln totally got off on those educational films. His 1998 short The Honey Pot pays tribute to that classic PBS documentary style. Lincoln teaches us everything we've ever wanted to know about honey but were afraid to ask. — Jason Wishnow

When did you make The Honey Pot? 1998. I left USC to use the money I would have spent on film school to shoot a couple of short films back in Tulsa. I made The Honey Pot for fun, for attention, and for my friends. I love the look of Super 8 so I came up with a story that fit the format. It was an excellent excuse to learn about bee farming, cover a woman in honey and hang out with skater punks.

How was it received? I kept everyone in the dark about what I was making. When they saw it, my parents and girlfriend at the time were a mixture of proud and pissed.

What came next? The first screening was in Tulsa at a punk rock show in this kid's garage. It played on a small TV/VCR between bands. When the film began, the kids quieted down and gathered around the TV/VCR. The garage was packed. Kids were out on the driveway stretching their necks to watch. They loved it, screamed for me to play it again, and immediately started asking for copies.

Honey Pot was the first film I ever submitted to film festivals. So it was a big deal for me when I was accepted to the New York Underground Film Festival. Soon after that, the film started spreading at festivals, galleries, public access shows and short film websites. Everyone from gutter punks to supermodels were making copies of copies to show to friends. I even got a couple of offers to direct porn, which I stupidly declined.

It was one of the first movies iFilm placed on their site. The web certainly played a vital role in spreading the honey. I was among the first batch of filmmakers to put their work online.

What are you working on these days? I direct commercials and music videos. I recently wrote a sci-fi/horror script for Fox Searchlight. Just directed a music video for Aqueduct. Shooting two new short films. Writing a big horror/action feature with Martin Schenk. Writing a comic book for IDW. Organizing the 8th Annual Tulsa Overground, which happens every August.

Any advice for budding indie filmmakers? Make sure this is what you really want to do, because it is fucking hard. Don't go to school for film. Study anything and everything else so you will actually have something to say when you do make a film. Read a lot of books. Get smarter. Or don't go to school at all. Take the money you would spend on tuition and load up on filmmaking software and hardware.

Make your films where you are. You don't need to go to Hollywood or New York. Assuming your film is any good, you will stand out from the crowd. Hollywood loves to discover talent from the boondocks. Don't reference other films. Reference yourself.
