 VIDEO

promotion
Sometimes Hooksexup readers don't just point me in the direction of films they like, but films they've made (yes, that is a hint). Sometimes those films are really good, and sometimes they even stray away from the silly sexcapades I normally showcase, and into more profound subjects. Eric Schmider, frontman for the Boston-based band Mollycoddle, presents a blitzkrieg of floating hearts, giddy sea monsters and dancing sperm in the music video for his song "Love Is." — Jason Wishnow

Tell me about the video.
When that song came about, I was living in Spain with my ex. We were stumbling around trying to find "happiness" and "love". Awkward in-bed moments of dissatisfaction and attempts to explain it all away were becoming too common. She wrote the words, and I did the music. For the video, I didn't want another MTV-style, look-at-me or sad-eyed-sensitive thing. The idea came from the work I do with Faith Soloway and Ian Brownell creating Multimedia Comedy Schlock Operas. I put an ad up on Craigslist asking for someone to animate the tune, and after sifting through over a hundred responses I found David Schlafman. I'd eventually like to gig with animation behind the band.

Tell me about your collaboration process.
David is brilliant. I would like to say we collaborated ear to eye, but props go to his brain alone for the video's direction. He creates characters out of all the junk in his head and draws out comedy and sweetness with a twist. I didn't want someone to animate the lyrics literally. It was all his idea to combine bombs and love.

How did you two make the video?
David's technique fit my Luddite approach. I recorded my CD in a studio all on tape. People are making music on their computers in their bedrooms; I didn't want that for this record. David's method parallels that. His stuff is hand-drawn or water-colored, then scanned in.

Where else is it playing?
The vid was put up on the site on Valentine's Day. In those first few days, I had over 30,000 downloads. My ISP was pissed. It was shown at the South By Southwest music festival recently, and David and I are submitting it to film and animation festivals. I have high quality versions of the video on DVD (if any readers would like to get a copy, they should contact me). You can really see the layering better.

One of the more provocative attributes of your album, "Beautiful Californian Failure," is that a portion of the proceeds go to Stem Cell Research.
Sad events seem to creep up on many of us, and if our lives are running straight and sweet, we really can't feel for the people who are going through a lot of shit. My brother was recently diagnosed with MS. I chose the Stem Cell Research Foundation instead of giving directly to MS groups because it seems like a "two birds" thing; many afflictions might be treated through the study of stem cells — ALS, Huntington's, MS, etc. There was also a political, anti-right reason for going that route.

At the risk of sounding like Howard Jones: What is love?
Oh crap! I should have expected that. Love is the ultimate WMD. Not a soul can escape it. When you don't have it, you long for it until you are stretched and tortured. When you get it, it's so wonderful that you will sacrifice other relationships to maintain it. And when your love leaves, it's the crushing despair that shrinks you back, ready to be stretched out again. It is the embodiment of irony.

Where can we see more of your work?
The band site (where you can reach me) is www.mollycoddle.org and the animator's site is www.schlafman.com.

Check back every Monday for a different film, filmmaker, or filmsite profile. If you'd like to recommend a short movie, email .
