Conan O'Brien: Funny "Ha Ha" or Funny "Please Stop"?

Posted by Nicole Pasulka

In this video Conan O'Brien flips his lid over a fire alarm test. Half of Scanner thinks he's adorable, and the other half wouldn't kick Craig Ferguson out of bed for Conan. So it's safe to say we're torn. Is this outtake cute, or just cranky?

Generally I don't think Conan's outrageously funny, but with this it seems he wasn't so much flipping his lid as he was trying to entertain the audience during an unexpected situation.

I don't think it's eiher. He's improvising. There's even a moment where the producer says "give it another thirty seconds" and you can see him think "okay, I have to stretch this for another thirty seconds." He's not coming out of character, he's just trying to keep his audience entertained.

Funny ha ha, if anything.  I thought he handled the situation pretty well.

He wrote for 'The Simpsons' during that show's best years. I think his show is funny in a dorky and messy way. His monologue, however, is awful. I thought that maybe it was supposed to be funny in a 'so bad it's funny' kind-of-way, but I realized after a while that it's probably just bad.

I enjoyed this.  Conan just riffing in an unxpected situation is funnier than most of his monologue bits, especially as he's been harping on Max's replacement drummer's bare feet for two weeks now.

What are you talking about? If this annoys you, you're just an uptight, humorless dick. Very far from 'flipping his lid' he handled the situation beautifully: very professional, funny and likeable (as always). From what I've seen (I live in the UK)he is by far the only US chat show host who knows what he's doing and consistently entertains without resorting to smug, lazy condescension (Letterman), or lazy, dishonest 'Hey, I'm just a regular shmoe like youz guyz' (Leno). As for him 'flipping his lid' I ask you again: what are you talking about? If anything he was amused by the whole thing.

Oh and Craig Ferguson? I'm Scottish, and remember his live act when he was just atarting out: he called himself Bing Hitler and tried to be 'outrageous', but his act was just a diluted, piss-weak rip-off of Jerry Sadowitz. He's the ultimate showbiz careerist, mediocre at every single thing he does (comedy, acting, chat show hosting). It doesn't surprise me that they love him in America though: I guess a cute accent overrles lack of authenticity over there. Come on guys, excercise some discrimination, Geez.

Typoes galore, (as well as needless repetition in my first post).

Sorry about that.
