The University of Phoenix Does Exist

Posted by Emily Farris

For real, kids, we drove past it when we were home for Christmas. We meant to rush back and tell you all, but we got so caught up with the Spears family and our computer crashing, it completely skipped our mind. We were reminded when we saw the ad this morning. The University of Phoenix actually does exist. We saw it with our own two eyes!

Whether they have real professors is a whole other story.

It should be noted that "home" is Missouri.

[Image via... you didn't think we'd stop on the highway to actually take a picture, did you?]

Not sure where you saw this one, but there's one of these in Massachusetts, in the town of Westboro (about 40 miles west of Boston).

How it can be in Massachusetts, and be the "University of Phoenix", I have no idea.

Its because its a totally for-profit school. Like Mcdonalds, they'll sell shit wherever people will buy it. Which includes Massachusetts, apparently.

Um, like Harvard is not a totally for-profit school?

Why are you all so down on this? The headquarters is actually in Phoenix, AZ btw, where they do offer live classes too. You do actually have to work and learn something, it's not like those "earn your BA in 18 weeks" places.

Actually, Harvard and every reputable college and university is either a not-for-profit corporation or a unit of government.  That's not to say you can't learn anything from the University of Phoenix -- you can go to the Public Library and get a great education -- but caveat emptor (does U of P offer Latin?).

I saw it too!

I was staying in a hotel right next door... down the street from a certain hospital and not too far from a certain Italian restaurant with granny panties hanging from the rafters. Am I on the right track?

There's one here in Phoenix that looks just like that one .... except there's an eternal dark, swirling cloud that hovers above it.  And a swarm of flying monkeys.

The University of Phoenix is an accredited university. I'm not saying you can get great education, but they meet the needs of a lot of people and it's not just fluff.

When I moved to the West coast, I realized I had to give up a lot of my biases about education that were pretty ingrained in my Northeastern sensibilities. E.g., not all community colleges are crap. In the West we don't have the same system of small liberal arts colleges you find all over the place in the East, and so community colleges fill some of that role. Some of them are quite excellent.

Another example: I was originally a little worried about getting my PhD at a state U, since many of the state Us in the the northeast are of lesser repute, but it turns out that ASU, where I am, is on the cutting edge of what I want to do, and is the most innovative and well-supported financially.

And profrobert, really, do people still need to learn latin? I'm a scientist and I do just fine without it...

Libbywiz:  *Need* to learn Latin?  No.  But I think it's excellent for students who want to understand English grammar and vocabulary better, and it helps a lot on the SAT English portion (if you don't recognize a work, you might be able to tickle it out based on knowing the Latin root).  It's also a great background for anyone who wants to learn a Romance language.
