Scanner Emily on the New MacBook Air: Enh

Posted by Emily Farris

Scanner is not a techblog, but we're all here on computers or fancy phones so we must, in some small way, care about technology. And yesterday was a pretty big day in the world of computers: Mac announced its newest release, the MacBook Air, the thinnest laptop ever. Unfortunately, we're far less impressed than we thought we'd be.

If you remember, our dirty old iBook crashed last week, forcing us to buy a MacBook just before Apple released their new product. This was sad for us. Though we still have rabbit ears on our TV, the original Nintendo we had as a kid, and our phone is held together with bright pink masking tape, when we do shell out the money for a new computer, we like to be somewhat on top of things.

But the MacBook air is kind-of like a $1,799 version of the iPhone with a full-size keyboard. It has only one USB port, no disc drive, and it looks a little like a UFO. And seriously, it's quite possible we'd lose it amid all the crap on our desk.

All in all, the MacBook air makes us love our new MacBook even more. And in a few years we'll probably jump on the MacBook Air bandwagon. Just in time for Mac to release a keyboard that's implanted in our fingers.

But we want to hear from you. What do you think of the MacBook Air? Did you pre-order one? Do you even give a shit?

No shit given.  If I get a mac of any kind in the next two years, it'll be an iPhone or an iPod Touch.  having a tinier laptop might be nicer if I had to use public transportation or the like, but at the moment, I can take up as much room as a want.

I love Macs, but the fact that you can't even change out a battery on the MacBook Air just blows.

I have a $2000 insurance check destined to buy a replacement Mac, and so while I don't usually care about these things, I've been anxiously awaiting this MacWorld announcement for months.

I had the same reaction as you: big whoop.  It looks nice, but without a large hard-drive, firewire or ethernet ports, and the matte screen I was praying for, I really don't care. My current 12" powerbook is 1.6 pounds heaver than the MacBook Air, the size of a sheet of paper, and just over an inch thick--it's not like it was a big hulking tank of a computer in the first place. I toss in a regular-sized bag and barely notice it's there (which is why I have an insurance check...ahem.) So it seems rather stupid to shave off a whole lot of functionality off the MacBook just to shave off 1.6 pounds.  Shaving off functionality and performance (it's slower than the MacBook) while at the same time dramatically raising the price just makes it seem even more ludicrous.  It seems rather anorexic, now that I think about it--as in, obsessively concerned about one's weight to the point that compromises one's health (i.e. functionality and performance. I'm happy that it's more eco-friendly, but there's no reason why they can't just make their computers eco-friendly and not be so gimmicky about it.

Anyway, I love my 12" Powerbook, and it will be a sad day when I have to replace it. But when I do, it will be with a MacBook.  Yunno, the "heavy" one.

It seems that apple are continuing their downward spiral of form over function.

Eventually they will come out with the coolest computer ever that will do absolutely nothing. And do it poorly.

I think that those who accuse apple of form over function are missing the point - this is a subnotebook, which is designed for diminutive size at the cost of some functionality. Back in the day they had the duo, which lacked an optical drive and only had a serial port on the laptop part, but had a docking station which added extra ports. Although this doesn't have a docking station, most likely it would be used as a second computer, probably in addition to a desktop. The types of people who would shell out for this are those that can afford to have two computers, not to mention pay the close to 2,000 dollar entry fee. For said people, whether or not the computer has a firewire port isn't the point - it's showing the sleek, gleaming thing off. Apple has tried this before, with the cube coming to mind - whether or not this will be another cube remains to be seen.
