January is an important month for women's reproductive rights. Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Morgentaler Decision, the Supreme Court case in Canada giving women the right to choose.
Before the ruling, a woman was only legally able to have an abortion if it was ruled medically necessary by a "Therapeutic Abortion Committee." The panel of three doctors would determine if the woman would be exempt from Canada's Criminal Code for "producing miscarriage."
Since the ruling, there are no legal restrictions on abortion in Canada.
