Edwards To Drop Out Today

Posted by Brian Fairbanks

Senator John Edwards (D-North Carolina) will end his Presidential bid at 1pm eastern, from the very same 9th Ward in New Orleans where he announced just over a year ago. Sources say he will then break ground on a home for Katrina victims with his old buddies at Habitat For Humanity.

Just in case you thought he was going to say, "Poor people? What do I need you for now?!"

I have to say, this one bums me out a little bit.  I don't think he'd have won but he had my vote on Super Tuesday.  I think, all popularity aside, he was the best choice.  :-\

This worries me as well. I have thought for some time that a big reason that John Edwards was still in the race was because Elizabeth Edwards has Stage 4 breast cancer and this gives the whole family something to focus on and fight for other than her life. So I worry that he is dropping out in advance of Super Tuesday.

This is sad because the only reason Edwards is behind in the race is that there are such historically important figures running this cycle.  In any other garden variety race against other white dudes, he would win it.  Hopefully he will become Vice President, and can then become President in eight years.

I am upset that the people who would most have benefited from Edwards policies probably didn't even vote and in all probability have not had access to the education that would help them understand this. Voter turnout is always lowest among the people that most need universal health care, college assistance, and social security reform-the people who make their "living" supporting and serving the upper classes who do vote.

Also, I will be unhappy if this results in the Dems being so divided that we lose again in November (the Clinton/Obama divide seems to grow daily). I thought Edwards was the best choice but mostly I wish that the field was broader for Super Tuesday at least. Half the country hasn't voted and we are down to two?

Edwards was doomed the minute Senators Clinton and Obama got into the race.  The dems are so afraid of being called bigoted that they could never nominate a white male over one of two minorities.
