Confirmed: Heath Ledger Died of an "Accidental Overdose"

Posted by Emily Farris

Heath Ledger's official cause of death was ruled "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine." In other words, he died of an "accidental overdose."

Ledger, whose body was found in his New York apartment January 22, had painkillers, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and other prescription drugs in his system, according to the New York City medical examiner. But they're not going to share what concentrations of each they found, or if one drug played more of a role in his death than any other.

In a statement, his father, Kim Ledger said:

"While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."

Not too long before his death, Ledger spoke to The New York Times:

"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night. I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."

Makes you think twice about casually popping a Vicodin with a glass or four of wine.

How can having two different narcotic pain killers and four different sleeping pills in your system at once be considered an "accidental" overdose?

We thought of putting "accidental" in quotes or italics, but didn't want to be too disrespectful. But maybe we should update that. We absolutely thought the same thing.

Hell, makes you think twice before taking prescription meds. Do you have any idea how many people get side effescts from individual meds, not to mention combinations? Number Needed to Treat (NNT)- it means the number of people who have to take a drug in order for one of them to see a benefit. Which means that (in the case of stains) 100 people need to take a drug in order for one person to see a benefit. The rest see nothing or just negative side effects.

What a shame that Heath Ledger's doctor(s) never checked the drugs that he was given for potential interactions or that he didn't divulge to his doc(s) what he was taking. Please always 'fess up to everything you're on, herbal, pharmaceutical, supplements, etc. to prevent this from happening to you.

Or better yet, if you live in a state where NDs are licensed, find a naturopathic physician who's gone to school to learn the interactions.

I would bet that Mr. Ledger acquired the prescriptions from more than one Dr. during his filming of Batman and other movies, while traveling from location to location. I would also bet that he neglected to inform the Dr.s of the other prescriptions he was taking. Bet number three, he filled the prescriptions at different pharmacies so they were not aware of the other drugs he had been prescribed and could not provide a warning.

That explains how the Dr.s and pharmacists may be excused for the situation.

Now taking 6 different prescription drugs of the caliber that he did, is far from accidental.

I think they should rename "accidental overdose" as "stupidity overdose."
