Hillary Clinton is the New "Black"?

Posted by Brian Fairbanks

We did a boatload of stories involving Tina Fey yesterday, but none of them covered her bizarre endorsement of Hillary Clinton on this weekend's Saturday Night Live. The following clip had the desperately dull Clinton talking points... the desperately evasive non-attacks of Barack Obama (by not saying anything, that is)... the desperate comedy and that uncomfortable Hillary Clinton cackle. Okay, maybe not the last one, thank God. We digg 30 Rock and Tina Fey, but the video is just sad, hopeless, and represents the worst case of politicking on SNL we've ever witnessed.

If Elvis Costello can get banned for this, maybe Lorne Michaels will ban endorsements of doomed Presidential candidates who are supported only because of their gender?

Thank you for saying this.  I love Tina Fey and was so disappointed by how lame her little rant was.  I am not voting for anyone based on a shared sex organ.  Well, not shared, but you know what I mean.  (And PS--Is there a remote possibility that people call Hillary a bitch because she is a bitch?  Just wondering.)

I thought it was quite funny, actually. SNL chooses sides all the time; at least this time it was entertaining.

i personally thought it was funny and right on. "free to vote for whoever oprah tells them to"-hilarious-"bitches get things done"-funny and true. if this had been about "media-superstar" obama no one would be complaining-they'd be calling it brave or inspiring. everytime a woman supports clinton it's because they both have a vagina but everytime a man supports obama it's obviously because he's just right. give me a break.

I don't see it as her endorsing Clinton. She was being funny and making a point: Barack is great but the media is going nuts over him and it's sorta ridiculous, and, always quick to be on the edge, SNL called it out several times throughout the episode.

Besides didn't her character on 30 rock, which is based on Tina herself, say she was supporting Barack?

I thought it actually started to work at the Bitch part...up until then, it was all mean-spirited snark without substance (Lindsey Lohan is old looking, 65 year old ladies aren't middle aged, the only reason people owuld vote for Obama is because Oprah tells them too)...If Tina had just started at the Bitch part and riffed on that, it wouldn't have looked so bad. Unfortunately, as it was, it just showed what a lot of New York Feminists haven't figured out yet: maybe the problem isn't that Hillary Clinton is a woman, maybe the problem is she hasn't ever explained her vote on the Iraq War in a satisfactory manner, she is running on "experience" she gained as someone's wife (not exactly a liberating way of doing things) and has less elective experience than Obama, she has tried to cast Obama as substance-free when anyone with an internet connection can check out their respective websites and see that Obama has far more in the way of substantive information on the issues for people who care to read it, and maybe the trainwreck that her campaign has turned into demonstrates the sort of president she would be (By "ready on day one" does she mean "ready to continue the sort of leadership of George W. Bush"? The similarities are striking--fiscally irresponsible, blindly loyal to friends and cronies and maliciously attacking enemies (loosely defined as anyone who dares to publicly disagree), writing off areas of the country as irrelevant because they supported someone else, refusing to admit mistakes, and having an overall attitude of entitlement.)

In short, it would have been nice if instead of trotting out the whole "vote with your genitals" garbage, Tina Fey had asked why thefirst serious presidential campaign by a woman had to be the wife of a former president who has only served 8 years in elective office instead of one of the many women with impressive credentials AND a history of public service? While I disagreed with her politics and wouldn’t have voted for her, I wish Elizabeth Dole had had more of a shot back in 1999. I wish Pat Schroeder had stayed in the race in 1988. And there is a gigantic list of women in congress and in governor-ships around the country whom I hope will have a shot in 2012, 2016, and beyond. Hillary Clinton may well have broken a glass ceiling and I think women owe a debt to her, but one can be grateful to her and still choose to vote for the better candidate.

Her character said she tells everyone she's voting for Barack, but she will probably vote for McCain.

About the segment, though, I was disappointed. I thought because it was in a segment on “Women's Issues,” that she was being satirical about how the media covers Clinton as if only women would vote for her, but by the end, it was clear, I was interpreting it all wrong. The skit was an excuse to endorse Clinton. Cool: But I wish she could have come up with a reason for doing so that was also funny.

I thought it was funny, too.  You know, nobody's pooing all over Scanner's (ahem: unfunny) endorsement of Obama.  But you know what I do want to poo all over?  Your choice of language, which is so obviously tainted with the same old sexist, anti-woman crap that ALWAYS gets said about Clinton: "desperate," "cackle," "hopeless."  Also, "bizarre?"  Really?  There ARE reasons to vote for Clinton, and claiming that the only one is because of her vagina is OFFENSIVE.  Maybe Fey didn't mention all of her real reasons for voting for Clinton because it was a COMEDY SKIT.

This Scanner entry was sexist and ignorant.  I'm so bored with you.

I agree with heatherred and the others. Scanner used to be my favorite site, and now it's just not funny anymore.

When did Scanner become sexist? It seems like a pretty recent development, and it's a bummer.

I thought Tina Fey's bit was funny and smart.  Scanner's sexist post on it however, made me close scanner immediately and take a break from Hooksexup overall.  There are many reasons to vote for Hilary besides her vagina.  I voted for Obama, but I'm still not sure I made the right decision,  as their stances on most issues are damn near identical.
