Village Voice Confirms What We Expected: Portishead Most Hooksexup-iest Music Around

Posted by Bryan Christian

All right, for months now we've had a sneaking suspicion that, when pressed on what their humpiest music would be, Hooksexup readers would put the Portishead ouevre on top of the list. It's what we expected you to say after we ran this. And while we hinted at it here, we fully expected more of you to come right out and and be all like "Hells, yeah!" and make it official. But few did. And now look -- the goddamned Village Voice has scooped us on this.

Judging by the volume of hooksexup.com personal-ad types who list them as preferred getting-it-on music (and please don't ask how I know this), Portishead have soundtracked a whole lot of horny but socially awkward and tentative encounters.

All right, well, we're guessing per capita they haven't been quite as awkward as this guy seems to think, but whatever. So, what say you? Any other bands come close to being as Hooksexup-y as Portishead? Tell us in the comments. Seriously, TELL US!!!

(By the way, the VV loves the new record, Third, which has been leaking all around the Internets in an unfinished state.)

I mean c'mon. What about Lamb?  Massive attack? Those are some of the humpiest bands ever.

Portishead and Massive Attack are at the top of my list.

For a one-shot album, definitely "Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By" by Lovage.  Oooooh yeah.

Air.  The legendary guitarist Wah-wah Watson (it's him playing on "Shaft") had some solo work that was Love-a-licious.

Massive Attack, def. Air I'm not so sure about--a little too goofy and whimsical and not quite sultry enough for me. Portishead probably does reign as the best getting-it-on band. Of course, I never really have sex to music--I think, being a musician, I can really only concentrate on either sex OR music but not both at the same time (and not concentrating on either one is not an option.) But Portishead is definitely the music that makes me WANT to get it on the most. Or the music that, after a night of great sex, makes me unconsciously grin at my sexy memories the next day on the subway listening to my ipod.

Portishead was indeed in the CDplayer back in 1997. Hard to still get all bothered about Ten years later (especially since it will remind one of a few "horny but socially awkward and tentative encounters" back when. So now, Thom Yorck works interestingly well, but for really hot: Mark Lanegan.

I was introduced to Portishead by a girl who said it had coercive power over her sex drive.  It has never failed to have the same effect on anyone I've been with since.

Biased sample?  Possibly.  But Portishead reigns.  It's the first time I've ever wanted to sleep with someone's voice.

Ooooh,

portishead is way up there on the sexytime music list, but Dead Can Dance - Into the Labyrinth does it for me.

As long as no one turns on that damn Enigma album, I'm good.

I would recommend Kid Loco.  he creates similar moods as Portishead, particularly on "Kill Your Darlings"
