MSNBC: Bush Signed Torture Memo

Posted by Brian Fairbanks

The evidence, which in an ideal world would end his Presidency, after the jump...

The short version? The White House has long denied Bush knew anything about the military's/CIA's policy of deliberately torturing and abusing inmates. Although that signature does not appear to say "George Bush," sources say it is his handwriting and that this is no fake.

UPDATE: Did anyone see Andrew Sullivan on TV last weekend? Well, he basically said that Bush administration officials should remain in the country, since war crimes charges are possible. And he's a gay Republican-- imagine what the Democrats will say on the Sunday shows.

But do we really want Cheney in charge? What to do, what to do?

Um, Brian?  Your "evidence" is a bit weak, since that's not the memo they're talking about.

The memo you've posted there is just about the US's decision to not consider al Qaeda and the Taliban as operating under the jurisdiction of the Geneva Convention.

If you're going to post the wrong material, at least post the link to the original article so I can find out for myself what's going on...

Yeah, can you link to your source please.  PS tartlet, I don't think that is the original article... but I might be wrong.  That's from April 1, and it's about the release of the Yoo torture memo.

I've been trying to post a link to the correct article, but our server's down.

Just wrote a really long explanation and update on this story, explaining why MSNBC was in the title of this piece but there was no link to MSNBC (short version: not online yet), but I do want to quickly clarify that the memo above is not the same memo tartlet is referring to, hence tartlet's confusion.

More on this:

There were indeed two memos, one written by a staffer saying it's nice to torture, a statement which was lambasted and buried like George Bush's rumored lover. That story broke on Apr 1 and was linked above, on MSNBC.

I hadn't seen that Bush memo before, so I thought it was new today when it was sent to me. Turns out the story's been around for a while, although nobody seems to care. And indeed, Bush signs off on torturing prisoners, which is the whole point of this story.
