Am I the only one who's way more disturbed by the second photo, where she and Daddy are posed an awful lot like lovers in a Calvin Klein perfume ad?

It's all pretty sickening.  This is a child who is being sexualized for marketing purposes.  This is going to end badly, mark my words.  She's going to turn up somewhere on the Britney Spears-Amy Winehouse continuum.

I don't think sexualization is the problem.  The G-rated exploitation has got to be just as bad, if not worse.  In that context I find Disney's response hilarious (and by hilarious, I mean disgustingly hypocritical):

"The Disney Channel, which airs Cyrus' TV show "Hannah Montana," was also critical of Vanity Fair. "Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines," a network statement said."

I found even more disturbing than either of the photos her remark in the VF interview when asked about Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan: " . . . I think most 21- to 25-year-olds go through this kind of thing. It’s just not on a platform—you know what I mean? Basically, they’re being normal 21-year-olds . . . "

What's so wrong about that cover shot?  I think it's classic.  It's tasteful, and a hundred times less sexualized than any twelve-year-old girl walking down the street in a halter top and booty shorts.

Re my previous comment, I was talking about the top photo, not the father/daughter one.  I think that one's creepy too.

Does anyone else get an 'Interview With the vampire' vibe from the first one? Those red lips...that contented stare of someone that just tasted blood for the first time.

yeah, the first pic - eh, whatever. but the pics with her dad? TOTALLY creepy. wtf is up with the poses? these are not father daughter poses, particularly with miley making pouty sexy faces in all of them. ick ick ick.

Initially, I thought the top photo was one of those milk ads. I see nothing wrong with it. She looks fresher than she usually does.

this isn't exactly sexy. the topless one is a little scary with those ribs poking out but i suppose she is only a freaking teen. i wonder if this will get the tv media in an uproar like her green bra picture on the internets.

also, is it vanity fair's aim to make all these photos styled exactly the same? where's the fun in that?

The father-daughter one is definitely creepy. As for the top one, I agree that it would be a tasteful, even a nice photo of an adult woman but I cannot shake the feeling that it's just inappropriate for a 15-year-old. If my future daughter shows me photos like that of her when she's 20 I'll admire them. At 15, forget it.

Since when has 15 been considered too young to be sexualized?  Been on MySpace recently? How do the (99 year old) girls represent themselves? Not a lot of Laura Ashley there.

Also, I see the shot with her dad as contemplative, protective and affectionate. Have we really come to a place where a male parent is automatically assumed to have a sexual interest in his daughter?

To each his own I guess, but I think the pix are pretty hot. Oddly in the bottom one you can see a real western vista peeking out behind the gray seamless. Nice detail.

This is a story ONLY because she's a Disney Tween Cash  Machine. She's got to grow up and she definitely has the goods to make the jump.

This is a completely manufactured "controversy" put together by Disney to get an older market interested in this terrifying monstrosity.

She's kind of bland, and I never thought I'd say this, but I kind of like her for that. She's not conventionally attractive. The first photograph is great. The second, whatever, call it Greek, incest is every where in (I'm going to regret this) art.

Many models are teenagers.  I'm sure if you looked up the ages of models used in similar shoots, a majority would be under 18.  No one is freaking out that their pictures are inappropriate.

Hmm....good point.  It isn't the actual (possible) skeeviness  of photographing topless underage girls that people are so upset about.
