Scanner Roundtable: What's Up With All the Spring Break Ups?

Posted by Emily Farris

It seems that lately friends of ours are breaking up on a daily basis. What's up with that? Isn't spring supposed to be for lovers?

Except, every time we've signed into Facebook for the past month or so somebody new is "no longer listed as in a relationship."

Is it about new beginnings? Because we thought spring was about fucking and the best way to not have sex is to break up with the person you're regularly having sex with. Unless you're not regularly having sex, in which case we understand the break up. By why wait until spring?

Is it because everyone starts to get a little more naked? Because who can control themselves around all that skin, right? No. That can't be it.

We're sticking with the new beginning theory until you give us something better.

Talk to us!

if your friends are in grad school, i think the switch from ordinary schedule to summer schedule can make us a little stir crazy.  about three weeks after the end of class i always want to get away from everything that reminds me of being in school.

I have a friend who talks about this all the time.  He thinks people always break up in the spring because your subconscious is driving you to mate with as many people as possible while you have the chance.  Conversely, in the fall, people get into relationships (sometimes even relationships that they otherwise wouldn't) because their subconscious is trying to get them to prepare for the winter, since you don't go out and meet new people as often, and bedding down with a warm body every night is a great way to stay warm.

It's seasonal affective disorder, but in reverse. My gf just said she wants to "cool off." Well, it's getting hotter outside, so who doesn't? Maybe people want to have a warm body close by in winter, but not so much once the weather warms up?

Yep. I got the bomb dropped on me last week. Her reasoning didn't make any sense to me, though; it was too abrupt, and... it was just a crazy move. So I fought it and won, complete with a late-night surprise visit and make-up worthy of any romantic comedy.

it does seem to be very across the bench this year. No matter how long the relationship has gone, all around they're going 'naw, not gonna work'
