Obama: Let The Backlash Begin

Posted by Brian Fairbanks

As usual, the Democratic Party would rather lose than not have everything they've ever wanted in a candidate. Republicans get up earlier, are better at messaging, controlling the debate and the media, and know how to compromise. Which is why they have a strong independent candidate in John McCain, who will be tough for any opponent to defeat.

Meanwhile, the Democrats, long after Obama was the inevitable nominee, continued to vote for Hillary Clinton instead of rallying around the winner and shoring up his chances for the general. If the party members themselves are this disgruntled about their nominee, then how are they to win over independents and Republicans over the next five months?

Nope, a majority of Hillary Clinton supporters would rather, they say, vote for McCain than their second choice, who is just as good on every issue (if not better, especially if we're talking about Iraq) except for healthcare. Are they mad at some perceived injustice perpetuated by the Obama campaign? If not, there's really no reason to dislike the guy and not vote for him. He campaigned hard and well, and avoided sexist or other nasty attacks. So, why doesn't he deserve your vote?

i've heard a lot of hillary supporters on tv claiming the obama camp has been misogynistic and sexist, but wtf are they getting this from? I havent seen one speech where obama says anything about hillary being a woman other than in a positive light- just baffles me.

It's the same sour grapes as when the Obama supporters were saying that they'd stay home rather than vote for Clinton as the nominee.  I believe it will go away.  Most Clinton supporters are Democratic party stalwarts, and they will see that Obama is much better for the party and the Democratic agenda than McCain.  This is an opportunity for the party to control the executive and both houses of Congress, which hasn't happened since Bill Clinton's first two years in office, and before that, since the Carter Administration.  That is too good for any sane Democrat to pass up.

BTW, you know where I think the anger among some Clinton supporters comes from (note, I voted for Clinton, but I'll enthusiastically support Obama now)?  There's a strong sense of "It's My Turn" in the party.  This was the same platform Carl McCall ran on for New York governor in 2002, and that Mark Green ran on for NYC Mayor in 2001.  It never works.  2008 was supposed to be Hillary's turn, and Obama (whose turn was supposed to be in 2016) jumped the line.  It's silly, but I think a number of people feel that way.

Since when is a supporter of either one of our disgustingly incompetent political parties sane?  South Park has it right, no matter what voters are asked to choose between a giant douche or a turd sandwich.

Hillary's one belief is that she should be in charge.  She's the sort of person that has repeatedly demonstrated that she would say or do anything to get elected.

Obama's protectionist and fiscal beliefs are financial suicide.

McCain's social policies are utterly offensive and totally indefensible.

Do I need to invoke the names of the prior two democratic challengers or our current head of state to further prove my point?

What's more disturbing is that were the parties re-aligned to create an anti-trade pro-spending socially regressive party and a libertarian party, the libertarians would be destroyed in every election.

"Why doesn't he deserve your vote?"?  Let's try this instead: "While you may have problems with Obama, how would you justify a decision to inflict another Republican on this country?  Would you rather remain disgruntled and help pave the way for more long, depressing years of fear and ignorance, or grow up and just vote for the first candidate we've had in a long, long time who may actually possess a soul?  If you answered A, may I suggest some Prozac and a reality check?"

nederick has it right. We can not afford to have another Republican in the White House, at least not until that party has a good spell in the wilderness and purges itself of its extremists.

As an exiled Brit, this takes me back to the late 70s, when Jim Callaghan's Labour administration was so unpopular among Labour Party activists they basically ceded the election to Maggie Thatcher's Conservatives, preferring to bitch and moan about the damage the Tories were doing to the country for the next EIGHTEEN years!
