How Getting High Can Get You AIDS

Posted by Steve McKay

We know what you’re thinking…but no…this is not some redneck posting on a church message board. This is an actual "information" pamphlet from the 90’s by the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, which gets its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Apparently it is still being distributed!

It informs us that when you do drugs you get really stupid and might "get romantic" with someone. Then you could get AIDS, because when you do drugs like alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine you "just don’t care." Information pamphlets that talk cool to try to freak teens out are usually pretty funny, but this thing kills two birds with one stone in a way that is just plain confusing.

It tries to use AIDS to scare kids off both sex and drugs all at once, and ends up totally diluting all of the issues it "tackles." It doesn’t even really talk about contaminated needles, which is really the only firm straight line you can draw from consensual drug use to HIV.

The best part of the page is the comic, in which a hip urban teen with a flat-top, Fresh Prince shirt and shell-toes says, or (as the caps might suggest) screams, to his girlfriend "I DON’T DO DRUGS!"  Her confusing response to him is "I’m not interested."…What? That doesn’t make any sense at all. Who proof-reads these things?

Hate to burst your rant bubble, but for at least one drug, crystal meth, there is a link between its use and HIV. Multiple studies have shown that while high on crystal meth,  people are much less likely to use a condom with a partner whose HIV status is unknown. But, I have to agree with the stupidness of saying that alcohol and marijuana usage can lead to HIV.

Alcohol and drugs lower your inhibitions and ability to make sound judgments (Witness Girls Gone Wild, drunk dialing, the last person you brought home after a night out, etc.).  Poor judgment = more likely to have sex in a situation you wouldn't otherwise and less likely to use a condom.  The basic premise is pretty sound, although that is a godawful illustration.

I agree with Steve, I think this pamphlet is fucking stupid. Personally, I've never had unprotected sex as a result of being drunk or stoned. I've never jumped off a building under the influence either. But fine, yes, alcohol and drugs lower your inhibitions but adopting an all-or-nothing approach with sensationalistic captions is not going to make kids safer. There are different degrees of risk associated with different behaviors and also ways to maximize your safety, plan ahead and be prepared and these should all be discussed in depth, instead of basically saying "that joint is filled with AIDS!" Kids will party and kids will do some stupid things. Adults operate every day on the assumption that kids will not always do what they tell them or want them to do. So might as well give kids as much information as possible to minimize the possibility of their mistakes having tragic consequences, instead of giving them muddy facts and hoping they're not going to have any questions. And what's with not even discussing concrete things like contaminated needles and condom use? Lame! Lamer than the dumb cartoon with the incoherent exchange and hilarious haircut.
