For months now, rumors that McCain would pick retired badass Colin Powell to be his Vice Presidential nominee have had Democrats shaking in their little blue boots. Now, comes a stunning reversal, albeit another one from the rumor mill: not only will Powell not jump on the McCain bandwagon, he won't back McCain at all-- but his opponent.
From Robert Novak, conservative columnist and the man who outed Valerie Plame in print:
McCain strategists... wince in anticipating headlines generated by Powell's expected endorsement of Obama.
Powell, who it seems is done with the Republican Party, was all but forced out of his cabinet position before he was ready, partly because he was furious with the Bush Administration over Iraq and all its other many fuck-ups. Ah, finally, all this abuse of power is coming back to bite George and company in the ass.
And check out this sensationally nasty quote from another "Obamacon" (conservative backing Barack), economist Larry Hunter, also mentioned in Novak's piece:
"The Republican Party is a dead rotting carcass with a few decrepit old leaders stumbling around like zombies in a horror version of 'Weekend With Bernie,' handcuffed to a corpse."
While we don't ever expect any major cons like Powell or Senator Chuck Hagel to ever say something like that when endorsing Obama, it would make our year if anyone backed this guy up...
