Since When Were Any Pictures of Anyone Born After 1990 Considered "Vintage?"

Posted by Emily Farris

Or.... when did we get old?

Is it us, or should the words "vintage" and "MySpace" never, ever appear in the same headline?

If you watch Gossip Girl (like we do, with no shame, thank you very much), you might be nominally interested in these "Vintage MySpace Pictures" of Taylor Momsen on this blog apparently put together by a 13-year-old. If like us, you were born before the 90's, you might be interested in why they're called "vintage?"

Maybe you're just a creepy old dude who wants to look at pictures of a 12-year-old-girl. In that case, stop right here, Mister!

Vintage is one of those words that has been misused so much that many dictionaries now even include some of the previously incorrect usages. Vintage does have a number of proper meanings, none of which equates even roughly to "old." Most generally, the word describes something, or a set of something, originating from one particular time period. Over the last few decades, people have started to use it to describe something they think is old in a cool way. Phrases like "vintage clothing," "vintage cars," or "vintage comic books" don't make much sense in the contexts they are generally used. All clothing is vintage unless it is from a time period which can only be described as "current," or, more narrowly, if it can't be said to be typical or representative of any time period.
