Breastfeeding: If You Can Ask For It, You Don't Get To Do It

Posted by Nicole Pasulka

Prepare yourselves for the most terrifying thing you'll see all week: an eight-year-old who's just full of love for her mother's fun parts. In her own words, breast milk is better than "a million melons." Mom likes that her daughters breastfeed almost into adolescence because it shelters them from the sad, scary world...while making the world sadder and scarier for us.

We are all for breastfeeding, but someone needs to draw the line when the kid will have breasts herself in a couple years.

Meet your new nightmare:

This was not uncommon among pioneers in the 19th century, who often nursed toddlers until the age of 3 or 4 to supplement nutrition.  Today, nursing an 8-yr-old seems kinky as hell...

On the list of things I am concerned about in the world, this is somewhere near the very bottom.  Older than average daughter gets nutrition from mother.  Big deal.  Christ, what is it with people and their reaction to breastfeeding?  (Even if the age in the presented example are a ways in to the tail of the distribution.)

I sure hope these girls are home-schooled.  Their classmates sure aren't going to see this as a wonderful, natural thing.

As a Doula, I can certainly wax on about the beauty and importance of breast milk and breastfeeding... BUT there is a line where the child starts developing socially and it completely takes all power and authority (and loving support) away from the father. Also social behavior becomes pretty strange when the child has another world to interact with, when the super-hormone inducing (drugging, basically) breast milk is still a safe-haven. The only world is then in the mother, and the only answer is with her >>> at a time when the child is developing very important psychological schemes about the world outside the womb....

I've seen this in action, and it isn't good....

as much as we all love breast milk... after 2/3 it's really just unhealthy for both the mother and the child's psyche.

If they were still drinking from bottles or sucking on pacifiers we would declare it age-inappropriate. So yeah. Totally inappropriate. And freaky.

My son will be 3 at the end of next month and he still nurses once or twice at night. I see nothing wrong with it. I would feel really strange nursing him (especially during the day) after the age of maybe 3 1/2 tho. Thats when I plan to cut him off from the night "boobie" LOL.
