  • Scanner Matt Loves Michiko Kakutani

Now that I have been blogging on Hooksexup for 24 hours, Scanner Emily suggested I introduce myself.

I'm Scanner Matt. I live in Brooklyn. I have a band (as is the prerequisite for living in Brooklyn). I'm almost done with my first novel (not a prerequisite for living in Brooklyn, but on the list of highly suggested endeavors). And I love Michiko Kakutani.

(You can just skip to my Michiko Kakutani video after the jump now or if you like, read why it exists first.)

I swear I'm not proclaiming my love for Ms. Kakutani, the brilliant (yes, I said brilliant—take that Mailer and Rushdie and Franzen!) literary critic of the New York Times, in hopes of someday finding a book I wrote on the cover of the Book Review. I enjoy her criticism and no, I don't think she has an agenda as many older white men have accused, usually when recieving less than pleasant reviews from her. She knows her books and refuses to put up with some of the crap that passes as high literarture these days. We don't always agree, Ms. Kakutani and I. For example, I think Ms. Kakutani should give Delillo's Underworld a second chance. I do have one bad thing to say about Ms. Kakutani though, I hate when she writes a review in the voice of a character from the book she is reviewing, but I guess even Ms. Kakutani gets bored sometimes and must have her fun.

As proof of my love for Ms. Kakutani my previously mentioned band and my previously mentioned book have combined themselves resulting in a song titled, "Michiko Kakutani" of all things. A friend of ours caught a performance of said song about a month ago and posted it on You Tube, which I included here complete with lyrics.
