The latest word from the bafflingly cast Star Trek reboot, helmed by TV wonderboy J.J. Abrams, is that recent WWYR superstar Winona Ryder is set to play Spock's mom. We'll wait here while you have a mild aneurysm.
As we remember the Trek mythology, this does not mean that she will be putting on elf ears and acting dour, since Spock was a halfie who got his logical, Vulcan side from his father and, from his Earth-born mother, got an impulsive, emotional human side which he struggled his entire life to control. We'll wait here while you reflect on the narrative efficiency that can occasionally result from excellent casting.
Still, this means that Ryder will be joining a group of unlikely actors that includes Zachary "SilasSylar" Quinto as her son, Simon "Shaun" Pegg as Scotty, John "Harold" Cho as Sulu, Karl "I've Played Lots of Hitmen" Urban as Dr. McCoy, Eric "Anything But Hulk" Bana as the bad guy, and Chris "Huh?" Pine as James Tiberius Kirk. We have no idea what to make of any this, other than to say: in Googling the new Kirk, we give him about a one-in-four chance of nailing Mrs. Spock. We'll wait here while you picture Winona Ryder in green body paint.
