Charles Manson texts from prison so much that it might become a crime

California prisons might make prisoner possession of cell phones illegal, and it's all because Charles Manson can't stop texting his friends. And leaving singing voicemails for them. After the notorious serial killer and cult leader was caught for a second time with a contraband cell phone hidden under his mattress, State Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima, decided he was having none of it, and has introduced a bill that could reduce credit for time served for those caught with phones, and make smuggling cell phones to prisoners a misdemeanor with possible fines up to $5,000. So consider yourselves warned: if you have any texts you've been meaning to send Charles Manson, you'd better do it now.

I hate that this freak is still alive. What a waste of money.
Since when do prisoners get cell phones? Who pays the bill? This is what's f**king wrong with this country, there ought to be something that makes incareration undesirable.
Considering that there are devices available that will block cellphone signals, I find it ludicrous that inmates are using cell phones to contact the outside. What a joke being in prison had become.
While cell phone scramblers might seem like a good idea, they'd be problematic since guards and jail personnel would have their phones scrambled as well (and I have no idea, but those scramblers might impact radios as well). Also, the law seems stupid for those with life sentences...and how do you fine an inmate with no money?
The biggest concern raised has been the possible interference scrambling devices have on emergency services communications. I agree also with the concern for the loss of service for the guards. Not only would it impact the rights of the guards, who have committed no crime that would deprive them of their rights, but it is a danger. What happens should an emergency situation arise that does not allow time or convenient access to a landline phone??? There is an issue of inmate and staff sefty alike should alternative methods of communication not be viable.

@dave1976 The monetary fines are only for visitors attempting to smuggle phones into the facility, while prisoners would face penalties relating to their sentencing.
Not to troll, but Charles Manson didn't actually kill anyone. So technically he's not a serial killer, just a manipulative murder encourager.
