Study: Oral sex might cause cancer

Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman in Black Swan

I hate to be a buzzkill, but all that amazing oral sex you're having might just lead to cancer. There's apparently been a great rise in the number of cases of head and neck cancers, the kind caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) which is spread through everyone's favorite word of Latin origin, cunnilingus.

According to Dr. Greg Hartig, professor of otolaryngology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, "It seems like a pretty good link that more sexual activity, particularly oral sex, is associated with increased HPV infection." And according to a study done way back in 2007, having six or more oral sex partners over a lifetime is associated with a 3.4 times higher risk for cancers of the base of the tongue, back of the throat or tonsils. Having twenty-six or more vaginal-sex partners tripled the risk.

Even with triple the risk, it's still an extremely low risk. It's more academically interesting than a practical concern (other than it's a good argument for having boys/men get the HPV vaccine). Carry on. And stop smoking...that really does give you cancer.

Uhh, what about that other latin word, fellatio? Men can't carry and infect others with HPV?

Fellatio is Italian. The Latin is fellatus. Most sexually active people are asymptomatically infected with one of the 40-odd strains of genital HPV. A much smaller percentage will develop an HPV infection with a significant risk of cancer. Interestingly, the strains that cause potentially lethal cervical cancer are the ones that don't cause warts.

You can only get that vaccine until you're 25, right? None of the oral sex I had before 25 was worth cancer, so yeah, get that vaccine if you're the right age.
