Leave it to Scientific American to remind us of the dangerous side of sex toys. According to a recent article:
It's entirely possible that someone's favorite cyclotron vibrator can shell-shock Hooksexups, penis rings might lead to a grievous case of penile gangrene or those little vibrating beads could slip upstream and become tragicomically lost in bodily cavities while still in the "on" position.
That paragraph conjures up some pretty horrific images, but it brings up a good point. The devices that are supposed to bring us pleasure can occasionally lead to embarrassing injuries. And how are we supposed to know if we're at risk? There is no governmental agency monitoring these über personal matters or a Consumer Reports guide to vibrators. Well, now concerned pleasure seekers can research and share their, uh, findings on SaferProducts.gov, a website set up by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.
While it's technically meant to document the safety of all appliances, Scientific American illustrates how it's being used to help inform and educate users on matters below the belt. It's a unique and empowering resource, and one that's especially needed when you consider the potential for leaching chemicals and Hooksexup shock that rarely crosses our mind. After all, nothing kills the mood more than an impromptu trip to the ER.
