Now that Entourage will officially end next summer, Mark Wahlberg has finished yet another vanity project: The Fighter, in which Wahlberg plays the boxer with, perhaps, the most heart. In defense of the trailer's swelling Oscar score and its spirited montage of the Boston working class (gross!), it showcases a decrepit-as-shit Christian Bale. It's amazing.

Losing a ton of weight is a time-honored tradition for actors who want awards, and why shouldn't it be? All that matters is that the audience believes that Christian Bale is a thug whose tormented past makes his body waste, his hair thin, and frankly, act like a big jerk to his boxer brother.

No one does "decrepit-as-shit" like Christian Bale. I think he looked even worse in The Machinist. Anyone else see that?

That "gross" parenthetical on the Boston working class was hysterical.

I'm sorry, but I don't except the notion that Christian Bale is a great actor. The obvious strain and effort and contrivance is always there. He doesn't impress me.
But I like Wahlberg, and Amy Adams is my favorite actress under 40, so I'll probably see this thing.

That should have been "accept," obviously...my bad

I don't disagree that Bale's effort shows through, making him less-than-great, but I hope I'm not reading you to say that Wahlberg is a better actor? You're just saying you like him, not that he's a better actor than Bale, right?

Lose a few pounds, look like you're suffering for your life's work, act and be like an asshole and you're guaranteed an Oscar. It works for women, but I hope it never happens to Bale. I saw him in The Machinest. I thought he was probably playing himself.

No I'm not saying Wahlberg is a better actor, but let's just say he aims lower and hits his target

Are there any women in Boston who aren't bartenders? (What is with that trope anyway?)
